General Dentistry

General dentistry involves the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of conditions, disorders and diseases affecting the teeth, gums and maxillofacial (associated with the jaw and face) region of the body. We as general dentists will work with you to develop a customized dental hygiene plan that incorporates dental examination, tooth cleaning, possible tooth scaling, X-ray and use of other diagnostic equipment to prevent, uncover or treat problems as early as possible.

We also may incorporate a variety of restorative procedures in the development of a comprehensive treatment plan that will help prevent decay or disease of the teeth, mouth, gums and tongue. General dentists also use restorative dentistry procedures to repair the effects of tooth decay, trauma, defect or disease in these areas of the mouth.

Cosmetic & Restorative

Cosmetic Dentistry is the branch of dentistry dealing with the appearance. It involves many techniques and options to treat teeth that are discolored, chipped, misshapen or missing. We can reshape your teeth to improve your smile, close spaces, restore worn or short teeth or alter the length of your teeth. This also includes making teeth whiter.

Many people believe that cosmetic dentistry is all about porcelain veneers but that is not true. It can be as simple as whitening and surface rejuvenation is all it takes.

Porcelain veneers- Many problems with your teeth can be solved with porcelain veneers. They are great for restoring worn or chipped teeth.

Teeth bleaching is very popular, easy, effective, and relatively inexpensive to have done. Everyone wants whiter teeth.
Restorative dentistry -Patients who have massive dental problems, restorative dentistry can provide a solution to improve speaking and chewing ability, leading to improvement in appearance and self confidence. Missing, damaged, or severely decayed teeth often need replacing. Dr. Linda Shafik, with her advanced experience in complex restorations can combine treatments such as dental implants, dental crowns, and dental bridges to restore your smile. You can be sure that you are receiving exceptional care from knowledgeable professionals.

Dentures

If you have lost a significant amount of your teeth due to gum disease, infection or tooth decay, complete dentures (replacing all teeth) and partial dentures (replacing some teeth) can bring back your smile. They are usually made from a gum coloured plastic base, with artificial teeth positioned so they restore your smile and bite.

Crowns & Bridges

A dental crown, also known as cap, that fits securely over a damaged, weakened, or badly decayed tooth. It can restore esthetic, function and form. They usually used following root canal therapy and dental implant procedures to add structural support and esthetic balance. Depending on where your tooth is orally, you can choose from ceramic, metal, or porcelain-fused crowns. Using advanced dental techniques, Dr. Linda Shafik, will design a crown that will strengthen the tooth and restores its shape and function
A dental bridge is used to fill in gaps between missing teeth in a row. It is composed of two crowns, which cover the teeth on either side of the gap, and an artificial tooth that fills in the gap. This will not only improve the appearance of your smile, but it also prevents your natural teeth from shifting into the gap. We use different types of dental bridges made from durable porcelain, gold, or composite materials. It could be fixed, removable or implant supported.

Root Canals

Root canal treatment, in spite of all the misleading myths and misconceptions spread about it, it provides an invaluable service. It repairs the dental pulp of an infected tooth under local anesthesia, the procedure is relatively painless and highly effective.

Digital X-Rays
Digital radiography is a form of x-ray imaging, where digital X-ray sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film. Advantages include time efficiency through bypassing chemical processing and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images. Also less radiation can be used to produce an image of similar contrast to conventional radiography.

Digital Radiography (DR) or (DX) is essentially filmless X-ray image capture. In place of X-ray film, a digital image capture device is used to record the X-ray image and make it available as a digital file that can be presented for interpretation and saved as part of the patient’s medical record. The advantages of DR over film include immediate image preview and availability, a wider dynamic range which makes it more forgiving for over- and under-exposure as well as the ability to apply special image processing techniques that enhance overall display of the image. The largest motivator for healthcare facilities to adopt DR is its potential to reduce costs associated with processing, managing and storing films. Typically there are two variants of digital image capture devices. These devices include Flat Panel detectors (FPDs), and High Density Line Scan Solid State detectors.

Intraoral Cameras
Our intra-oral camera is an amazing handheld device that combines an extremely bright light source with a tiny, high definition video camera. Most intra-oral cameras look a lot like a writing pen, and when moved around inside your mouth, they give our team the ability to see enlarged, detailed images of the surfaces of your teeth, the condition of your gums, and other valuable information about the tissues inside your mouth.

Dr. Shafik will use this tiny device to capture close-up pictures of your teeth that we often display on a monitor. Intra-oral cameras don’t cause any type of pain, discomfort, or ill side effects. They help us see tarnished or corroded fillings, decay, bleeding gums, plaque, or hairline fractures in your teeth, in real time, as you sit comfortably in our dental chair!

Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas or sweet air, is a chemical compound with the formula N2O. It is an oxide of nitrogen. At room temperature, it is a colorless non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet odor and taste. It is used in surgery and dentistry for its anesthetic and analgesic effects. It is known as “laughing gas” due to the euphoric effects of inhaling it, a property that has led to its recreational use as a dissociative anesthetic. It is also used as an oxidizer in rocketry and in motor racing to increase the power output of engines. At elevated temperatures, nitrous oxide is a powerful oxidizer similar to molecular oxygen.
